What To Do If Injured In A Motor Vehicle Crash

At some point, after driving for many years, statistics show that you are more than likely to be involved in a motor vehicle crash. Whether its a minor fender bender or major impact, injuries can be debilitating.

Even if the damage to your vehicle is minor, you must remember that any vehicle that collides into another may cause serious damage to the musculoskeletal system. Most passenger vehicle weigh in excess of 1 ton (that is one thousand pounds). Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transferred (Newton's Law of Physics). Most energy transferred is to the center of gravity which in this case, is you, the driver or passenger.

Whether the impact is large or small, we recommend to get examined right away at a hospital emergency room or a physician who has experience with acute musculoskeletal trauma. If you choose a hopsital ER, your vitals will be assessed, x-rays may or may not be taken and a CT scan may or may not be ordered. Pain medication and anti-inflammartories may be prescribed. Most of the time, the ER doctors will not order physical therapy, but may suggest you see a specialist.

Medicinal Cannabis

Did you ever think that the legalization of medicinal cannabis would ever reach the State of Illinois? The pilot program in Illinois will include 39 conditions and diseases and applies for persons 18 years or older. The program has already begun and will run through April 2018. Illinois is the 20th State to legalize medical cannabis.

Prior to beginning an application, it is important that the applicant discuss the options with the physician and understand fully the benefits of medical cannabis. There are several forms that need to be filled out prior to state certification and they include: patient application form, caregiver application form, physician certification form and fingerprint consent form. You can obtain a vendor list for fingerprints by going to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation website or ask the certifying physician for assistance. For patients under the 18 year cutoff, there is still hope. Effective January 1, 2015, the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act will qualify those under 18 to access medical cannabis-infused food products to assist in alleviating the symptoms that arise from debilitating diseases (again outlined in the 39 conditions accepted by the Act). In order to perform an evaluation of a patient, your doctor must be a qualifying MD or DO who is licensed under the Medical Practice Act of 1987, and must have a controlled substances license.

Listed below are most of the "Debilitating Medical Condition" covered in the Act:

1. Cancer
2. Glaucoma
3. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Most narcotics are addicting and cause harm to the human body. Studies have proven that Cannabis is safe and effective in alleviating pain and discomfort as well as symptomatology associated with specific medical conditions (listed above).

Advanced Physical Medicine Centers is now providing evaluations for those interested in the pilot program. It is most important, that before asking assistance to become certified, that you have reviewed the list of medical conditions. Our physicians are educated on the effects and uses of Medical Cannabis, and we have partnered with Medical Cannabis Outreach to assist with the certification process.

The process of certification can be costly, and it is not covered by insurance at this time. It is our recommendation that only those who have a serious debilitating condition apply. We are happy to assist any person who is interested in the program.

“A Doctor’s Confession to the City of Chicago…”

Dear friends,
I want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.
Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rosenthal with APM. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and that adorable little boy.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty years ago I was in a serious car accident, and I developed a painful neck condition known as “whiplash.” The pain in my neck was so intense that I couldn’t lift my chin or turn my head. I developed severe headaches. Finally, a friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor did an exam, took some x-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment didn’t hurt, it actually felt good. I got relief. It worked so well that I went to chiropractic school myself. I was actually studying to work in internal medicine, until this accident happened. Seeing a chiropractor changed my life.
It’s strange how life is, because now people come to our office with all of their neck problems. Also they come to me with their headaches, migraines, chronic pain, back-aches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, car accidents and work injuries, just to name a few.
Here’s what a few patients had to say:
“I’m on my last trimester of pregnancy and I owe my smoothest pregnancy yet to the doctors at APM.” (J.W.-Chicago Heights) “I never thought I would have been able to leave my cane at home. I no longer need assistance while walking, thanks to the doctors at APM.” (K.G.-Chicago). Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that!
Our office is called APM, and we have several offices located throughout the Chicagoland area. Call us today at: 708-340-0000. We accept most major health plans. APM…”your health hand made”.

KIDS CAN GET HEADACHES TOO

Whether they're pounding and throbbing or dull and aching, headaches are no picnic for kids. A lot of the time, they're caused by something simple - such as staying up too late, playing in the sun too long, or taking a bump to the head. But sometimes, headaches last longer or are accompanied by other symptoms.
Headaches can have a wide range of causes and many levels of severity.

It's important to understand how to recognize when a headache is just a passing pain, and when it's something more and your child needs medical treatment.

What's a Headache?
Most headaches happen outside the skull, in the nerves, blood vessels, and muscles that cover the head and neck. The muscles or blood vessels can swell, tighten, or go through other changes that stimulate or put pressure on the surrounding nerves. These nerves send a rush of pain messages to the brain, which brings on a headache.

What Causes Headaches?
In general, kids get the same types of headaches as adults. And headaches often are hereditary, so if you or your partner get them, your child may get them too. Some of the many potential headache triggers include:
• certain medications (headaches are a potential side effect of some)
• too little sleep or changes in sleep patterns
• skipping meals
• becoming dehydration
• stress
• a minor head injury
• using the computer or watching TV for a long time
• menstruation
• changes in hormone levels
• ear infections
• long trips in a car or bus
• listening to really loud music
• smoking
• smelling strong odors such as perfume, smoke, fumes, or a new car or carpet
• drinking or eating too much caffeine (in soda, coffee, tea, and chocolate)
• consuming certain foods (such as alcohol, cheese, pizza, chocolate, ice cream, fatty or fried food, lunchmeats, hot dogs, yogurt, aspartame, or anything with the seasoning MSG)

Most headaches aren't signs that something more is wrong. Only 10% of headaches are caused by other medical conditions, such as infections or other serious illnesses. If your child suffers from what you believe may be headaches, consult one of our heathcare professionals at APM for a free consultation at 877-DRBACKS. We now have 7 convenient locations. As always, at APM, we are dedicated to your health.
